When is a construction permit required?
A permit is required when you construct, enlarge, repair, renovate, alter, reconstruct or demolish a building or structure or you change the use of a building. A construction permit is permission to do most kinds of work on a dwelling or other type of commercial or industrial building. The purpose of the permit is to allow our inspectors to observe the progress of the work to be sure it is safe and meets code. The permit consists of five different Subcode sections as needed. They are Building, Electric, Plumbing, Fire, and Elevator.

What work does not require a permit?
Ordinary maintenance projects such as painting and carpeting in residential structures, replacement of storm windows and doors of the same size openings, wall paper, replacement of kitchen cabinets, etc. We strongly encourage you to call the Construction Office and check to see if a permit is needed.

Requirements
You must complete a Permit Applications are available from the Construction office daily from 9am to 4:30pm. A description the work to be done must be completed and submitted to be reviewed by the appropriate Subcode official(s). If it is rejected the applicant is notified of the reason. If it is approved, it is processed and you will be notified of the cost and when to pick up the completed permit.
