Going Green
This weekend town was going green in some pretty unique ways.
The annual tradition of grounds keeping by Little League parents was accomplished. For decades the masterminds in strategy for summer baseball lend their hand (and earn a few blisters) getting the fields in "opening day" shape. Keeping the baseball fields looking like the major leagues takes a ton of hard work. For most of this crew, this is the closest they'll ever get to gardening! Thanks to all these volunteers. Baseball is the center of the universe and maintaining our Fields of Dreams is heaven's work. Thanks.
And over in the ballroom of the Scottish Rite, our firefighters and their families, dozens of our businesses and hundreds of people from all over the area were completing the "shaving of the heads" to benefit pediatric cancer research through the St. Baldrick's fund. Today culminates our own March madness of fundraising for this worthy cause.
This event started several years ago as it seems so many of our families have dealt with pediatric cancer. It all took on a new face when we lost young firefighter Andy Staz. Today, two busloads of Pennsauken firefighters came to the event (after some early morning "services"). Families from all our area towns came out to watch the long hair drop to the floor. Randi from the Treehouse had grown in his classic fro and was prepared to shed the locks for bucks.
The final total isn't in yet but I bet they have far surpassed there prior $50,000 mark. Say thanks to all those bald men you see walking around town in the next few weeks. Bald is the new black.
