The County Jail
There have been a number of news reports about Camden County's move to privatize the county Jail. This would mean the layoff of hundreds of Corrections officers. There has been considerable protest by the union representing the officers. There are numerous issues the County freeholders are considering as they consider these decisions.
What affects Collingswood is the rumor that a privatized jail would be located in Camden on Mt. Ephraim Avenue and Rte 130 - in close proximity to Collingswood. Here's what we know and what we've done.
I met with county officials in early December and they explained the financial and legal realities influencing their decision. With respect to the word that the jail will be close to town, the County related that they expect to be advertising a Request for proposals/Qualifications from which they will select a private jail operator. They expect several national companies to submit bids. One of those companies has land off Mt. Ephraim Avenue under option agreements. They could be selected; they might not.
To address our concerns with the siting of a jail facility so close to residential areas, I've sent a letter to the County Administrator requesting the County include in their request that the facility can be no closer than 2000 feet from a residence. We will continue to work to ensure the County's efforts at solving their budget issues do not adversely affect Collingswood. A copy of the letter is attached for your convenience.
